Goals and objectives of the track

Social inclusiveness is a core priority for transport systems given their role in providing the mobility essential to accessing services. At a time of public sector austerity this priority raises some important questions:

  • Which sections of society should be prioritised when planning transport services
  • To what end are we providing transport services? Is the aim to deliver economic, environmental and/or social outcomes?
  • If beneficial outcomes are competing how should trade-offs be determined and decisions made?
  • If we cannot expect to simply future proof transport infrastructures by extrapolating from existing traffic flows, how do we address effectiveness, efficiency and equity in future planning?

Contributions are invited that address these questions from the perspective of:

  • Technology - to what extent do new technologies offer a capacity to reduce the environmental impact of transport services whilst addressing access and equity issues?
  • Policy and planning - are politicians willing to introduce potentially unpopular policies that overcome social resistance to change?
  • Finance - how can price signals be designed to incentivise travellers to choose the best option from environmental and social perspectives?
  • Smart city concepts - are we fully exploiting opportunities afforded by more integrated planning to reduce demand for transport services?
  • Social change - what are the best means of empowering and engaging user groups in the shift to more sustainable transport systems?
  • Integrated planning - Could we reduce the need of travel of its intensity by combining better urban and transport planning?
